Friday night results
Brian Niven Park hosted three games tonight, all against Central FC. The crowd in attendance were treated to very exciting football with plenty of goals scored. Some goals were of the highest quality.
In the U-12 the young CQ Mariners went behind against the run of play but recovered through a Will MATHIESON goal to earn his team a point in a 1-1 draw. Most pleasing was the manner in which the youngsters applied the clubs playing philosophy. It was a real pleasure to watch the kids playing out from the back and passing the ball with a purpose. Coach Peter Elliott was delighted with his teams progress.
The second game of the night was played in front of a very large crowd and the U-14 players from both sides did not disappoint. It was two very different styles. Jaleel DONALD keeping goal for Central appeared to be under instruction to punt the ball long and direct to his forwards, and the tactic reminiscent of a rugby union fullback worked for a while because Central were two goals to the good before the Mariners knew what had hit them.
The Mariners youngsters stuck to their guns and continued to play the patterns and passing the ball around looking for passing channels and went into the break 3-2 up. Lachlan SILVER scored a peach of a goal from thirty yards out. It was a very intelligent goal. He looked up saw the keeper off his line and stuck the ball perfectly to beat a very good goalkeeper.
The second half saw Central equalise immediately from the kick off and we had a very good contest on our hands. The crowd were certainly entertained by the two different styles of play and the final result was a share of the spoils in a 4-4 draw. The U-14 Mariners did the club proud tonight and showed a cool calm and collected manner and stuck to the philosophy despite being 0-2 down showing a great belief in themselves and the system. The Coaches Cam and Chris Lette were pleased with the effort but urged their charges to continue to work hard at training. Goal scorers Lachlan SILVER (Wonder goal); Donovan BERGER, and a brace to Mikele VAIENTE who had a very good game in an unfamiliar number 9 role.
In the third match of the night the Mariners U-16 squad ran out deserved winners in a high scoring close encounter. The Mariners under the guidance of coach Georgina ADNUM played very good structured football. The patterns of play were clear with a number of good passes into the number 9 who laid the ball off to midfielders who in turn got the football out wide for wingers to deliver good crosses into the box.
One of the many highlights of the game was a fabulous strike by Sam Dopson. Sam drove a freekick with venom, from well outside the box. The Central goalkeeper was left motionless as the ball nestled in the net. Rai COSTA scored a wonderful volley from inside the box. Blake WARD and Xandre SKETCHER were the other goalscorers in the 4-3 win.
